Control

Eggs are laid loosely on damp soil. Larvae hatch after approx. 1 week and parasitise earthworms, moving through several instars before pupation, which occurs in the soil. With the approach of cooler weather, the adult flies seek shelter indoors, often in attics and lofts.  Large numbers of the flies may shelter together, and when artificially warmed may cause problems for homeowners.

Where possible, exclusion, proofing and harbourage denial is recommended.  Control of these species in breeding areas is impractical due to the particular life cycle.  See biology.  Where appropriate, space sprays, aerosol may be effective subject to local regulations.  Use of a nozzle vacuum cleaner is also recommended.
