Ok, lads. Here's one for all you Full Time, Bang At It Boys of Experience;

AndyB's a bugger for mentioning round this subject and it's had me scratching me head more than a little. Let's see if I can pick up any clues here ...

I get a call from a farm. The guy's fed up with his rats and wants me to do my thing. Obviously, on such a big job it's going to Have To Be Bait. I accept that, no problems.

But how Do ye price such a job??? Obviously, a survey will show wether it's a sneaky passer, or if there's " Loads " of them. But 'Loads' an exact science doth not make! If we knew there were 100? Fine. 100 x the feeding capability of average rat = ammount of bait. Boosh! We have our basic premise.

But how, when it's simply a case of " The place is crawling with them ", do we even start to work out a quote, considering the potential ammount of bait we may need. Obviously, I understand that we can figure in how we hope to Smoke x many (- Bait costs. + Time and effort costs ... etc) But ...

Can someone just give me a clue, please?

Cheers, lads.

Only way to do it is to figure out an initial cost then a cost for follow on visits. This year for some reason is a bad one for rats on farms,i've just got an email from my mate to say next week when i'm up there i've got three other places to go and see.
Go and spend some time looking in the most unlikely parts of the barns and storage areas with a torch and this will tell you how bad it is,put a few fenn traps in various places as a monitor to see which section is running best if need be but tell the farmer it's a lot more about just putting a few bags of bait down as they'll have a great deal to eat before touching a bag of bait from the nearest agri. store.
Prices.
Time too and from farm a-b.
Time spent looking on site c-d.
Pesticides used e-f.
Fair enough i now work in london where i could get anywhere between 60&100 per hour the upper end is with bait/proofing work but not bait stations in excessive ammounts. But if i was up home i'd be lucky if i got 30-40 with bait etc.
Or if the farms got decent shooting land come up with a compromise, rats equal shooting for fun.

i charge 45 per visit plus materails on a rat job, ive got a job running on a construction site at the moment where im getting away with charging 2.00 per bait block, and the rats are eating it like its going out of fashoin, and im visiting the site on a weekly basis to refill bait stations.(x6)

Steve, guestimate comes to mind with this type of job. You just have to cover the worst case scenario. On a few occasions I have done jobs and in the final analysis have though I should have charged more, but have never really lost money.

Don't feed them, get Rid of them

Plus Materials. Sweet!

Best case I ever heard of ~ a friend of my guvvnors. My boss reckons this boy is one The Best Pesters around. Do Anything. Mice? Yeah. Deer? Sure!

So, this guy got to tender for some vast job. Entire estate or Deer Park or something - I forget the details now - but it was all owned by some (liturally!) 'Rich Arab'. The Arab told his Agent to get it sorted. Agent asked our man.

This guy says something like, " I can do it for 1,000. If it costs any less? I tell ye and ye pay what it costs. ". He got / did the job and it cost him 650 in his rates, materials, etc. He told the Agent. The Agent told the Arab. The Arab said, " Keep the change! Yo de Man! "

Far as I remember it, our man says, No. A Contract is a Contract and he'd put his Contract in. 650 covers it. Ye can probably best sit and day dream about how that one ended up. But the guy's never been short of work!

Anyway, Thanks, lads. Survey will show the short comings of what ever the client's up to, to the detrement. I'll have to practice calling people 'Their own worst enemies' in acceptable phrases then

Steve,I have an idea of my prices 45 an hour, small one off rat job includes bait.
Bigger jobs guess estimate on bait, err on generous side, so if 2 sacks of your favourite + hours spent.
Or you could try he supplies bait then your hourly rate remember to include travel time at least one way.
You've my phone number if you need advice.
