I have a wilderness area where field mouses live. When the cold sets in and their food supplies gets scarce, the mice come into my basement and make a mess. I've trapped 8 mice so far and I really hate doing it. Some are just tiny young mice that do what we do and that's to eat.
Since all that the little buggers want is to eat, I thought.....WHY NOT PROVIDE SHELTER AND FOOD FOR THEM TO LIVE UNTIL THE WEATHER WARMS????
I was thinking to build them a MOUSE HOTEL and add a bag of flour in it . Is this a good idea or bad idea.
If this prevent them from entering my house then would the MOUSE HOTEL fulfill it purpose???? |

While I applaud and, so some extent, understand the humanity behind your reasoning; I really couldn't personally support your idea. Sorry.
Now here's my personal reasoning:
On the land above me lives a guy who keeps chickens - very badly. They live in quagmired pens and are fed in open troughs and trays. This is a deeply rural area, you understand? Well, surprise, surprise, he has Rats. LOTS of rats. So Many Damn Rats!!! All They want, of course, is a meal and a warm, sheltered place to spend the winter.
So they eat his chicken meal. Likely infect the eggs, which he illegally sells to the unwary public. They breed to hell. They're undermining his property and may yet bring about it and his destruction.
Mheanwhile, being so well 'Ranched', they're spreading. They've spread down to my own land and I've just been speaking to the farmer above this guy who is now too fully infested with the " Rat Ranchers " vermin. It's like I'm paying rent to this idiot. I'm having to put down so much bait, just to try and slow the tide, I'm buying bait Just for HIS rats - on My property.
He maybe thinks as you do? He certainly won't hear of employing me to come up there and hit them at source. I could do it for 'free', to save myself grief. But the expenditure on bait would bankrupt me!
I'm stuck and being shafted. Why? Because someone's thinking just as you are: " They're not really doing me any harm and, jeez, they only Want a bit of grub and a place to stay ....! "
When they've got in. Got at your wiring. And reduced your home to ashes: Where will You stay?

Mouse hotel....thats hilarious!!!
You honestly believe they would stay in the lil hotel with their bag of flour
Almost as effective as plugging in a pest shield!(other makes are available should you wish to waste your cash)

I will admit that I am not a mouse behavior expert but you certainly have gave food for thought. I have to confer with the people that have dealt with these rodents. I had a pretty good chuckle after I posted this idea.
Thanks......all......for your inputs!!!
Happy holidays to all!!!!! |
