I came across a handout from one of my customers which they give to people they come across 'Doing It Themselves'. I thought it quite good - what do you think?
Do It Yourself?
It can be tempting to attempt to carry out your own pest control, but this can lead to breaking the Law or even accidental poisoning.
Shops do sell basic pest control products; nevertheless you should be aware that these pesticides:
...may not carry the appropriate active ingredient or be of the correct formulation to enable you to successfully control your pests.
...require skill and experience to locate them in the correct place and at the right quantity.
...could cause harm to non-target species such as humans, fish, birds or domestic pets if not correctly used.
...could lead to a worse infestation if not used properly; this will ultimately be more expensive.
...have to be disposed of safely.
...could result in prosecution if used incorrectly.
...do not usually have a long-lasting effect.
There are many Laws relating to the competent use of pesticides.
To provide peace of mind (name of company) strongly advises you that you choose a professional company to carry out the work for you.
We will treat the problem competently, sympathetically and effectively. Our staff are fully trained and insured and will dispose of any by-products in the correct manner.
In addition, we will provide you with advice as to why you experienced pests in the first place and how you might prevent them in the future. |

Yes so do I.
Too many people think that rodent control is about buying some poison and chucking it in the general direction of the problem and assuming that it will sort it out.
As trained and experienced professionals we know that a much greater understanding of the target pest and how anticoagulants work is what is actually required. Also the reasons for the initial infestation and how to manage that at the same time. Add to that, as your customer points out, it all needs to be done safely and legally.
I recently had a case where rats had got into a loft. I thorough inspection identified that bird feeding was probably the cause and I instructed that this should be stopped during the treatment period. It wasn't and no bait was taken in the loft or outside. The customer bought an electro-magnetic repeller in the meantime . I insisted that bird feeding stopped and we got bait take outside and in the loft .
Customers, aren't they? I love them but I wish they would have more faith sometimes and take advice which is after all for their benefit. I tell them that the bird feeding usually only needs to stop for a couple of weeks in which time the rats will be gone and the bird feeding can then resume but in a controlled way (I always give advice on how to feed the birds whilst minimising the chances of attracting rats). |

| Ah ah, now that's a novel in itself Dusty. One thing I try not to do is tell my customers what not to do. They call me in to get rid of their rats not to tell them not to feed the birds, or not to have chickens. They want their cake and eat it and that's how it should be. Rats and birds feed and forage in different ways and on different levels and to a certain extent they can be segregated. It does need much commitment though and once the eye is taken off the ball things soon deteriorate. |

| No, they sort out their bird feeding and I sort out their pest control. Who knows if they take all advice they may not even get rats again. |
