The CIEH book "Pest control procedures in the food industry", which was published in January after extensive consultation, has proven to be a great success. The initial print run was 5,000 copies and these have now all gone. An additional print run of 2,000 copies has been delivered and this is in addition to the copies that have been down-loaded from the CIEH/NPAP website. The book is intended to set common standards for pest controllers, food hygiene inspectors, quality assurance managers and contract buyers. It is also being used by lecturers on environmental health courses at colleges and universities.

NPAP has now produced a draft book "Pest control procedures in the housing industry". This is being launched this week at the CIEH conference Best of the Best as a consultation document between now and 31st October, with a view to being published in final form in January 2010. The intended audience will be housing officers in local authorities, landlords, pest controllers and lecturers/students at colleges and universities.

Copies will be available to down-load shortly from the CIEH/NPAP website or hard copies can be obtained by sending an email to [email protected].

It is very important that professional pest controllers have an input into the draft document so that it is as valid a document as possible and so we hope to hear from posters on this website with as many comments as possible.

Best wishes
Jonathan

I Like It! In fact; I like it A Lot!

NPAP kindly sent me a 'Hot from the Server' PDF copy today. Now, frankly; I find most things in PDF format a bugger to read. All that scrolling up and down. It's hard to keep track.

I also, of course, have no way of knowing if the photo's of houses and such are intended for the hard copy? But, believe it or not, They appealed to me greatly too. Maybe I've gone quirky? But, I seldom see those old red brick properties these days. It was great to see such 'working environments' again

Rest of the illustrations were, of course, what we've come to expect, emanating from Osset.

From what I gather then, this book is aimed at the wider, less specialised audience? Maybe even Our client base? a sort of Primer for those liable to be on the receiving end of both the pests, and the pest controllers bill? Is that about in the ball park?

If so? Bang on! It won't teach many Pesties much new. But it certainly does lay out what needs to be done, where and why. Further more, it does so in bite sized, easily digestible chunks. I feel, after a scan of it, that this would be the perfect primer for anyone charged with 'Getting in a Pest Controller' and then liaising with them.

Armed with this little book, our Clients could really get an understanding of Why we're there. Why they Need us there. What sort of thing we're liable to be doing. Even how we'll likely go about it.

If the general public were made to sit down and read through this one? We'd all be rushed off our feet responding to calls! I feel it nicely understates the fact that it Does take a Professional to handle pests. At the same time, it gently guides the potential client along paths which may enable them to help themselves before they Create the problems we deal with in the first place.

All in all; A nice, easy read which yet gets across as much as need be understood by the potential, or actual, client base. Certainly a little volume which should be freely available at libraries and 'Community Advice Centres'.

Land Lords, Tenants, anyone else concerned with living in 'Housing' should be reading this book. It could make their lives more pleasant ~ and our jobs 'easier' too.

Finally; I did mention to NPAP that I'd give my thoughts on this one, compared to the tome produced by the WHO(E) ..... " Public Health Significance of Urban Pests ".

What can I say? I read about four chapters of that one. Took me months to achieve and, though I now consider myself quite the informed one, where bloody Dust Mites are concerned (Don't ever complain to Me about Asthma. Just read that book!) I'd sooner rake and dig at my eyes with a rusty fork than suffer Another chapter! It was like eating salt by the handful! Dry?! Good god; Who Read that, apart from the people constantly cited in it?!

(Sorry, Jonathan. There it is. Honest view from behind the cow shed. Balls of brass 'n all!)

This one? It's a book for the People. Middle Management, Residents Associations, Home Dwellers. Anyone liable to be the one to call in Pest Control should first be reading this book.

8/10 ? Donks ....?

* Jonathan; A Call / Decoy bird, and any potential capture Must also be provided with three sides of shelter, against the prevailing weathers. I know this isn't a Pesters Manual. But it'll alert the clients to check the Pesters work. I know about these things. I'll have the buggers Captive Breeding next! )

So comprehensive it's nearly as good as the Killgerm training manual. Well done to the authors and design team.

Adrian.
