We have some German cockroaches on our patch which is a bit of a rarity if not a welcome change. What do you guys use in your treatment program: Residual sprays, poison baits, IGRs or a combination ? What products and AI's do you use and what housekeeping, proofing and monitoring requirements do you encorporate in your treatment program ? Obviously I have been trained and qualified in cockroach control but have no personal experience and current products and procedures may well have changed in the last three years. There's nothing like a new challenge in the varied pest control profession and I value your experiences. Thanks. Andy |

Andy, I use a vacuum to suck up the population I see as I inspect, use a flusher to get the roaches out. System III works well on this. Mainly use Gel still using Maxforce, will change to Maxforce white later, Avert works well (Had a tube to trial). Use vacuum to greatly reduce the population which has great effect on control, check for cardboard, newspapers, Dust cracks and crevices.Remember Germans fly, disconcerting when they land on your head/face even if PPE'd up. Make sure vacuum has a HEPA filter so no allergens or body parts pollute the area.

Monitoring, German oothacas can hatch at 28 days, so a revisit would be in order at 5 weeks, I find Hoy Hoys or any monitoring trap works well as long as you have the bait/pheromone tablet as well. Or use rolled up corrugated paper in certain places, then inspect remove.

Spot, pretty much as Nick has outlined. I tend to do a lot of caulking of gaps, cracls, holes etc. I use a permethrin dust (Coopex, although Ficam D would also be equally as good) as a flusher and use a surface spray to skirting boards. A good gel bait to those harbourage areas that have not been contaminated by dust or surface spray. If its a really bad infestation I use a bottled, high pressure pyrethrin gas as an instant knock down. It has been many years since I have received a cockie call back.

Why thank you JD, Andy what type of premise, is it a major infestation (deep Harbourage)where even ULV may be appropriate. Don't spray any gel baits you've put down. I'm sure you knew that.

I don't think it is a very serious infestation. It is actually a job a colleague of mine is dealing with in a domestic kitchen. He said it seems to be confined to the fridge, inside and underneath. We were going to spray with ficam w and use Goliath Gel bait (not in fridge)as we have some in the stores. What is the best bait to use? One thing that is confusing me, possibly because it is the opposite to rodent treatments is that everyone talks about applying proofing measures before treatment. I'm sure this must be correct but what happens to the cockroaches that are in a wall void that you have just sealed. Are they supposed to die or couldn't they reappear somewhere else and complicate the control strategy ? What is the logic here ? |

Well they could starve to death. Don't forget to check door seals. Most roaches will be by motors at rear Warmth. Why spray when you could vacuum then gel bait?

Because Nick, some owners wish to see results, and many feel fleeced if they dont see at least some pesticide used. I have a lot of second and third generation Italians where I live (its a fishing village) and they insist on double strength. They dont get double strength as that is not according to label, and besided, sometimes more is worse than less, as it tends to repel

JD, times are changing, I explain to customer about how our industry is promoting safe use of pesticides, why we remove as much of roach population as we can, then use gel bait to finish of the roaches and those who may be in cracks/crevices. Where do roaches spend most of their time 90% why in cracks and crevices. Spraying in kitchens !!! Only as a spot treatment or last resort.
