For our friends now questioning LA contracts on the other site, you may wish to look here; www.foodlaw.rdg.ac.uk/pdf/FSA-code-2004.pdf
Its a big document so do not download it (115 pages long) but take a look at Chapter 1.3 Conflicts of interest
This has only been around 17 years but better late than never I suppose. |

Hey Nigel, As an ex LA inspector myself, conflicts of interest are about as rare as a pest free property in inner London!! There really is enough work for everyone to survive, especially in big cities and towns, just a case of selling your service well, and keeping up your end of the bargain, unless of course like a lot of contracts these days, it's sold by a surveyor whos last job was selling curtains!! Surveyors, dont ya just love em!! |

The reason it has probably reared its head again, is about 2 years ago, before the new food regulations came in to force, the food standards agency wrote a draft letter to all local authorities pointing out the potential for a conflict of interest if they were providing pest control services to food premises they also had a legal requirment to inspect and possibly use enforcement action against. Shame the HSE do not do the same, as councils also have a legal duty to inspect premises for health and safety issues. |

Hi Nigel, The biggest problem, is of course this: if the council pestie isn't up to scratch, or something goes horrendously wrong, the EHO can't serve a notice or prosecute them (the pestie), as this would mean to an extent, serving a notice on ones own employer.. That's why as a LA inspector, I NEVER informed people of our pest control services..... |

| IMHO local authorities should stick to enforcing the law and leave pest control to commercial operators. We have a perfectly adequate social security system to help those less fortunate people pay for any emergency treatment. |
