Habitat |

Worldwide distribution. Breeding on dead and decaying matter, these insects are linked with such materials even though capable of long distance flight. Although common in the wild, Calliphora sp. Are frequently to be found breeding in domestic and industrial situations, particularly where refuse and organic waste is involved.

Biology |
|
Upon emerging from the pupa, adult female blowflies are capable of mating and laying eggs in under 5 days in favourable conditions. Eggs generally hatch in less than a day, producing the characteristic "Maggot" larvae which pass through approx. 3 instars before leaving the substrate in search of a suitable place for pupation. Emergence is generally 2 weeks after pupation.

Pest Status |
|
One of the principal pests of public health. Blue Bottles or blow flies are renowned for landing and feeding on rotten meat and faeces and will typically translocate particles and microbes to fresh meat and food intended for human consumption. This behaviour has been linked with the occurrence of food poisoning and disease.

Control |
|
Good hygiene and proofing are important factors in controlling blow fly populations and should not be ignored. Subject to local regulations, residual insecticides on harbourage areas may be of benefit.
Space sprays with good knockdown action are often used.
