Everyone from the office and factory floor visited a local pest control training facility run by rodent behaviour expert Dr Steve Havers, to see live rats and mice, so they could gain a better understanding of what they are trying to achieve in their roles at PelGar.

The afternoon started with an introduction to rodent biology and behaviour, the basis for the development of many of the bait formulations produced at PelGar.

Then the staff had the chance to watch real life rats and mice behaving badly � feeding, fighting and doing their best to procreate � in large, purpose built pens in a converted poultry unit.

�Rat baits will work best if they exploit the target pests� natural behaviour,� says PelGar�s technical director Dr Jonathan Wade. �By studying how they feed, rest and play, we have been able to develop a range of effective formulations that rats are attracted to and will feed on for longer� as opposed to finding alternative food sources.�

Asked how they enjoyed their day away from the factory, most of the staff said they now had a much better understanding of what the company is trying to achieve. Most particularly enjoyed seeing the live rats � although some said they hoped they wouldn�t be getting rat-infested nightmares as a result!
