Hampshire-based pesticide manufacturer PelGar International has published a new booklet to help farmers tackle red mite infections in poultry houses.
Successful Red Mite Control The PelGar Guide was launched at the British Pig and Poultry Fair at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire today (13 May).
Red mite cause problems at many levels - stressing birds, which can severely affect production, carrying and spreading diseases such as salmonella, and reducing the quality of the end product, for example by spotting and dirtying eggs, explains PelGars technical director Dr Jonathan Wade.
They can also produce a form of dermatitis in humans and are generally not very pleasant to have around. With the average infestation costing 25,000 - when reduced productivity and treatment are taken into account, it is worth implementing measures to control them.
The PelGar Guide provides useful information on the red mite life cycle, and outlines the essential components for a successful control programme including advice on different pesticides, and how to apply them within poultry housing for greatest effect.
We have developed several pesticide formulations over the past few years specifically for the control of red mite, says Dr Wade. Most are based on one or more synthetic pyrethroids, well known for their broad spectrum activity. Some, such as Stingray ME, contain a potent insect growth regulator, and others, like Alphaban Super ME, have high levels of a pyrethroid synergist to enhance the control of resistant mite populations.
The Guide is available free on several stands across the show including Jansen, Labtec & Essex Environmental at the Pig and Poultry Fair, or from PelGar direct. Call 01420 80744 or email [email protected].
