Lets help the editor sort this problem out.
How can we let businesses post and not say they are touting for business.
Seperate registration for them, nice coloured border.
We need their help and contributions, any sensible ideas.
Say Jonathan
Killgerm

Helen
Luxam

Dean
Industrial
Or real hard and fast rules.

Ask them to use their company name as the user name, we will know who it is straight away, it will be up to us if we read their postings or not. Personally I would like to see the suppliers putting info on here, new products, special offers end of lines etc etc. why should we have to wait until Pestech or the like to find out whats about. If someone has a specific problem our email addresses are available they can respond direct. It will then be up to the individual to acknowledge the help if they choose to do so.
I have had some very helpful emails sent to me in reply to some of my postings. from suppliers as well as other Tech's

Is that editor Phil, touting for business again ????

I think, the problem is when businesses are replying to problems and trying to help with issues with which they may have a wiewpoint. It is seen as advertising because they are a business. It is a fine line.

Phil, touting but why not;
Hope you didn't mind this thread like Andy I find off fora very useful phone calls, e mails so whats your ideas, perhaps we should e mail the suppliers and tell them about the PCP market place paid listings for like Andys idea end of line returned unused stock.

Interesting idea nick. Theres clearly a market dying to talk to willing suppliers here. There's lots of ways we can make this work. Absolutely - if a supplier wants a commercial profile here I'd be delighted to talk to them.

Its great that suppliers and manufacturers are interacting with us here, their advise and help is welcomed, but touting for business is not. We can all e-mail one another, and if people edit their profile we know who they are. JP's reply to the thread about marketing is great, I would hope that he also e-mailed the person who asked the question. What we dont want is another BPCA farce, where no-one is allowed to mention a brand, or company, or say anything vaugely contraversial (must look for that dictionary).

I may have come up with a solution.. Take a look at the forum home page. The idea basically offers a way to get around the commercial postings issue. Thank god!

Phil
I don't think that you can have it both ways. You want suppliers to respond to postings but not to give commercial information. It will often be difficult to do this.

I believe that the answer is relatively simple.

1. Commercial postings should not be unsolicited but should only be made if they contain relevant answers to a posting already made on the subject.

2. Posters should clearly identify themselves either in the body of the text or in the signature used. This should be name of both individual and company. Let the readers then decide what they want to do about the posting.

I also believe that off-forum replies should be discouraged. If the posting is relevant, then let everybody know what the answer is, unless there is a legal or commercial in confidence reason for not posting openly.

Unsolicited commercial postings could be made on the suppliers' forum.

Best wishes

Hi Jonathan.
Hope you had a profitable trip to FAOPMA?
The Pest Control Portal forum was never there to discuss commercial issues - Please refer back to the original postings. Users obviously want to discuss commercial issues with you and suppliers understandably want to talk to their market. I believe you send them a ratecard when they want to do this in your magazine?

There is now a practical (and very effective!) way for suppliers to extend the commercial communications they have at exhibitions and in print media.

Drop me an email if you need more information about how it works.

I dont think phil is asking for it both ways. Just his. Your advise and opinions are wanted, but just be clear about who you (and your staff) are, and dont try to get a free advert off the back of someone elses posting. I cant see whats wrong with a bit of 'off forum' communication, some opinions are better expressed in private, and if you, or any other supplier want to provide information direct to a potential customer/product user, and they've supplied their e-mail address on their profile, whats the problem? This forum has been such a hit with people at ground level, perhaps KJ and other companies should consider some sort of financial support in the form of advertising.

Hi everyone

and hello matt the rat - I'm glad Killgerm are here too! I'm not hiding the fact that I work for Killgerm and wouldn't want to. I have tried to change my user name as was suggested but the profile section won't let me do it. I have added Killgerm onto my signature and on my job description in the profile so there should be no doubt I work for Killgerm. (Anyway I think everyone guessed by the amount of times I mentioned Killgerm who I work for!).

Best wishes

This forum has gone from strength to strength over recent months and i'm honoured to be a member and a moderator. Sometimes it can be awkward to respond to questions on specific items but a little tact and diplomacy is all that is required.
