When I was teaching pest control with NSW TAFE, they had satellite access and used to do live broadcasts to the various TAFE campuses. Students could watch and listen to the lectures and phone in, obtaining live replies to their questions. Not expecting such a thing Iain, was just reflecting that the rodent course would be worth while. UK seems to be light years ahead on the rodent aspect of pest control.

Correspondence - web cam - satellite broadcasts - interesting ideas indeed. I know that Whitmire Microgen in the States have an on-line 'Pest Control University' which seems to be quite popular. Certainly we have pesties in this country who consider themselves too far from any of the current training centres, who might find such suggestions of interest. As an industry I think we have to deliver training in the 21st Century in new ways and there are already moves in this direction with ideas such as the proposed 'Pest Control Academy' that are developing.
One of the biggest benefits of attending a training course in person, however, is the interaction between the trainers and the 'students'. With Clive's 'Bed Bug' course and the new 'Rodent Control in the Modern Environment' course that Adrian does for us this interaction is vital, as both are advanced courses for pesties who already have experience. I've been to a couple of the rodent one and although they both followed the same overall 'syllabus', they did differ due to the differing imput from the 'students'. Not only did I learn something new each time - so did Adrian!
Dusty - here's a suggestion for you to travel to Europe next year (on the business):
April 18th and 19th, Pest Ex 2007 in London, including seminars and a workshop on bed bugs April 20th travel with me and the missus to Barcelona, for a drive up the Costa Brava to Perpignon, France. April 21st visit the walled medieval city of Carcassonne and then back to Perpignon for the Catalan Dragons vs Warrington Wolves. April 22nd, drive back to Barcelona via Andorra. April 23rd and 24th - free to explore the UK (visiting pest control operations?) April 25th 'Bed Bug Control' course April 26th 'Rodent Control in the Modern Environment' course
Too good to miss!

I'm sure that a distance learning package for the old version of the RSPH level 2 was launched a few years ago but died a death. We expressed an interest but were told that there was not enough interest. Now something like the ADAS manual in an interactive CD_ROM format would be cool.
Dusty - ignore Iain's invitation. After the events of this morning we can do without any more aussies over here taking the mickey - it's hard enough buying a drink in the pub now! LOL. |

Bully, no gloating here. England has a great team that with a little luck, would have won. Punter and company should go out and buy a lottery ticket. |

If any of the future Barrettine courses are as good as the recent rodent one then I thoroughly recommend them even if it means you have to travel a bit (although I suppose Australia is a bit too far perhaps ) |

Hello
"A bit too far" ? Sorry, that can not be a valid reason. We all here have the internet. We can 'talk' to each other in real time. We can video each other in real time. We can exchange documents in real time.
The only stumbling blocks have to be the geography, the climate, the population and the methods used in other ares of the world.
We, in Australia, envy what Purdue University in the USA can do. We envy what the UK can do. Most of that Aussie envy is on a population basis where you are guaranteed a classful. We are not that good right now. Aussie equals 48 UK's (that includes the Scottish and the Irish bit). We are only 20 million. It's OK, you can stay where you are!
I am working with the UPMA group in OZ (www.upma.com.au) to provide an effective, meaningful, auditable and reliable form of delivering Urban Pest Management to all who wish to gain a qualification in our country's nationally recognised training agenda.
The hurdles are huge, the matter of getting different areas of the industry are huge, The ability to be nationally recognised and still be nationally audited are also huge, but with webcams, still photos, doxuments and other evidence, personal appearences (if possible)we can, and will do it.
Mate, I'd travel from Scotland to Devon for meaningful information. But I know 60 miles in the UK is a long haul. All those pubs to pass !!
Hope this helps
Best Regards Allen ([email protected])

I note now that all Centrelink ( the govt body that doles aout the dole lol) do all their training exclusively by satellite. Training in-house has died a natural death. All braodcasts are live and interactive.
